Four moves that limit the damage, in order.
- Find the main shut-off valve and close it. It is usually near the water meter, in the basement, on the street side.
- Open a tap at the lowest level of the house to empty the pipes.
- Move anything water can ruin: rugs, boxes, furniture, electronics.
- Take photos of the damage for your insurance, before you start mopping.

How do I shut off the house water?

Is this really an emergency?
If water is running and you cannot stop it, yes. A slow drain or a dripping faucet can wait for an appointment.
What should I do while waiting for the plumber?
